How can you reorganize your home when you need an extra bedroom?
When you need an extra bedroom, start by reviewing how the existing space is divided. A large room may accommodate two separate rooms, a walk-in wardrobe can be replaced with wardrobes in the bedrooms, and changing how certain rooms are used can create a better balance. These possibilities need to be tested on a floor plan that includes furniture.
I’m Simona Preda, interior architect and founder of Urban Moon. Here’s how I applied this approach for a family whose child was still sharing the parents’ bedroom.
Is the problem the furniture arrangement or the floor plan?
If you already have all the rooms you need, but a wardrobe blocks a walkway or you cannot find space for a desk, it is worth testing different furniture positions and sizes.
When you need a separate room, the assessment should also consider changes to the internal layout. Look at how the available space is being used:
Is one room much larger than its occupants need?
Is another too small for the activities it needs to accommodate?
Does a walk-in wardrobe occupy a separate room but still provide insufficient storage?
Are family members sharing a bedroom when they need separate spaces?
The answers show what is worth exploring. Each option can then be tested on a plan showing doors, windows, furniture and circulation space.
A real example: creating separate bedrooms for two children
In this home, one child shared the parents’ bedroom. The other had a separate bedroom, but it was smaller than the bathroom. The parents and one child stored their clothes in a shared walk-in wardrobe that did not provide enough space.
I redesigned the floor layout through three changes:
1. I divided the parents’ bedroom into two rooms. In the proposed layout, the parents have a separate bedroom, and the child who shared with them has a room of their own.
2. I swapped the bathroom and the other child’s bedroom. The child gets a larger bedroom, while the bathroom is rearranged within the former bedroom.
3. I removed the shared walk-in wardrobe.I incorporated that area into the new layout and added wardrobes to each bedroom.
The proposed result: two children’s bedrooms, each with a bed, desk and wardrobe, plus a parents’ bedroom with its own storage and desk—all within the same floor area.

What should you check before changing the internal layout?
When dividing a room, access, windows and furniture need to be considered together. Each resulting room must be practical to use: you need to be able to open the wardrobe, pull out the desk chair and move around the bed.
Relocating a bathroom requires a technical assessment of the plumbing and the building. The solution in this example cannot automatically be applied to another home. The feasibility of altering walls and rerouting plumbing must be checked before work begins.
Who can help you compare layout options for your home?
Layout optimization assesses how space and furniture are arranged, based on the dimensions of your home and the needs of the people living there. It can also include initial proposals for changes to the internal layout.
Through Urban Moon’s layout optimization service:
I prepare 2–3 layout options for your space.
We compare and adjust them during a 30-minute online meeting per room.
You receive a final layout plan with recommended dimensions the day after the meeting.
The service costs €75 per room. Technical assessments and construction documentation are arranged separately.
If you need an extra bedroom or are unsure how to arrange your rooms and furniture, we can start by comparing options for your home.
